10th Street

Our 10th Street project is an exploration of preserving and celebrating the historic character of the original house while renovating and adding on to make it reflect the new owners lifestyle. The house was built in 1898 by local builder Nick Dawson, known for many of the Queen Anne style limestone cottages in the Castle Hill Historic district. At the time it was developed, W. 10th Street was considered a middle-class suburb of Austin conveniently located along the newly constructed West Line streetcar route.

As in many of our historic residences, numerous changes were made to look as though they were always there, while other changes are purposefully modern in their aesthetic. The living room, for example, appears original when in fact it is the combination of two smaller rooms. Other areas, such as the glass railed steel catwalk on the upper level, and the new sun room with large pivoting custom steel windows, offer dramatic counterpoint.
